Which unit does my country use?

The United States and a few others report serum creatinine in mg/dL. The UK, most of Europe, Canada, Australia, and much of the world use µmol/L (an SI unit). If you're comparing a result to a reference range or an online tool, make sure both are in the same unit.

Why does the unit matter for eGFR?

The CKD-EPI equation that turns creatinine into eGFR expects mg/dL. If you enter a µmol/L value as if it were mg/dL, the eGFR will be wildly wrong. Our eGFR calculator accepts either unit and converts for you — but if you're doing it by hand, convert first.

What is a normal creatinine level?

Roughly 0.7–1.3 mg/dL (about 62–115 µmol/L) for men and 0.6–1.1 mg/dL (about 53–97 µmol/L) for women, though ranges vary by lab and with muscle mass. Because the normal band is wide, clinicians usually look at the eGFR derived from creatinine rather than the raw number.

Frequently asked questions

Multiply mg/dL by 88.42 to get µmol/L, and divide µmol/L by 88.42 to go the other way. So 1.0 mg/dL is about 88.4 µmol/L, and 100 µmol/L is about 1.13 mg/dL. The factor comes from creatinine's molar mass (113.12 g/mol).
